Why an Outlander season 4 teaser may not come out this month

Outlander season 4

Is it possible that an Outlander season 4 teaser is going to come out this month? It’s certainly possible, but we don’t like to create any sort of false expectations.

As a matter of fact, there is a part of us that thinks we could be waiting for most of the month to see some more footage on the series, and there is a pretty clear reason for that — May sweeps. This is, by far, the busiest time of the year for the world of television. This is when the fates of many different shows are decided on network TV, when finales are airing, and also when the broadcast networks choose to hold their upfront presentations. There’s a lot going on and from a Starz point of view now, they may decide here that patience is a virtue when it comes to releasing a season 4 teaser.

What the network did last year for season 3 was smart — they released the teaser before sweeps started, giving them a little more time to dominate the spotlight. If they are to release it in May this year, there’s a chance that it could get a little more lost in the shuffle — at least for casual viewers (not for us, mind you) — with everything else that is going on in the press.

As for when Outlander should release the teaser at this point to get the most return on their investment, we’re starting to sound a little bit like a broken record here. June 1 could be the right time to make it happen. It’s on the other side of May sweeps, for starters, so you may dominate the news cycle a little bit more. That’s especially true since it’s on a Friday and you may stick around in the headlines a little bit longer. Beyond that, it’s World Outlander Day! We already wrote that this could be the perfect time to announce a season 5 / possible season 6 renewal, so why not go ahead and make both of these announcements at the same exact time?

As a writer who enjoys writing about the show and a viewer who wants that instant gratification, we’d talk more footage tomorrow if we could. (Wouldn’t it be ironic if they released the teaser tomorrow after all of this?) Yet, we’re also thinking in terms of the long-term success and also getting attention from viewers who may not always watch the show. If we want Outlander to grow, courting these people is important. After all, it’s already pretty darn clear that most diehard fans will keep watching.
