Outlander season 5 renewal hopes: Three reasons not to worry

We’re officially in the month of May now, and there is still no official word regarding an Outlander season 5 renewal at Starz. Obviously, CarterMatt was hoping that there was going to be some sort of official news on the subject by now, but nope… we know that’s frustrating. It’s made even more so given that we’re in May sweeps, otherwise known as a time in which many different shows end up coming back for additional seasons. Even today, we had a chance to write about one of our other favorites in Poldark coming back for another batch of episodes.

For the sake of today’s article, we want to do our part to assuage any concerns and reiterate further that while the wait is annoying, it’s also not necessarily bad when you look at some of what is going on beyond the scenes. We’ve got for you below three reasons why you don’t have to worry when it comes to the show’s future.

The creators have already said so – We’re pretty darn inclined to listen to what the likes of Ronald D. Moore and Chris Albrecht over at Starz have said on this subject. They’ve shown the utmost confidence in a renewal being issued and it almost certainly will. To go along with that, we do believe we’re going to get a two-season renewal — it’s almost our reward for having to wait for so long in order to see it.

Remember that for now, the production team has already confirmed that they are looking ahead and working on the future of the show beyond this season. If there were serious worries over cancellation, that wouldn’t be happening to the extent that it is.

The ratings are great – How often has a network opted to cancel a show that is one of their most successful properties, and is still very early on in its run? There’s no real reason for Starz to do that. It would be a public-relations nightmare for them and one that would cause the entertainment industry to raise all sorts of questions as a whole. Even if the did cancel Outlander for any reason we foresee someone else picking it up almost immediately.

There is still plenty of time – Think about things this way: While we thought there would be a renewal before the writers room gets back to work this summer, technically the room could still open even before season 5 is official. As long as that renewal is official by the time serious pre-production begins in Scotland, all will be fine — with that, there’s no real reason to think that this is a decision that has to be made today or tomorrow.

Would it be nice for us to get some sort of additional information on why it’s taking so long to bring Outlander back? Sure, but that’s not something that Starz just hands out for free. Typically, the answer with most of these questions is negotiations in some form or another. Sometimes, it’s a legal debate, whereas other times it is about budgets, scheduling, or something else related to production. Doing a two-season renewal is another reason for things to take some time.
