Rob Schneider takes Saturday Night Live to task for Alec Baldwin’s Donald Trump, more

Saturday Night Live season 42

There is no new episode of Saturday Night Live this weekend (the sketch series is poised to return to NBC next week), but we do have some interesting news to report today from former cast member Rob Schneider on what is a rather interesting subject — his sentiment that the show has become too politically biased in the Donald Trump era.

Speaking within a new interview with the New York Daily News, Schneider had the following to say regarding why he thinks the series’ politically leanings make it less interesting:

“The fun of ‘Saturday Night Live’ was always you never knew which way they leaned politically … You kind of assumed they would lean more left and liberal, but now the cat’s out of the bag they are completely against Trump, which I think makes it less interesting because you know the direction the piece is going.”

Schneider also goes on to lambast Alec Baldwin as Trump, saying that he has too much vitriol for the role and there is less to be excited about in terms of watching someone who hates the person that he is lampooning.

Does Schneider have any points? We will say that the Trump character has grown a little tired just because it feels like we’ve explored Baldwin’s Trump as much as we can. However, it also feels somewhat foolish to assume that SNL would approach Trump any different given his attitude towards the show and the entertainment business these days. Trump has also personally insulted Baldwin’s impression, calling for Darrell Hammond to return to do his version of the character again. If someone is saying negative things about you, are you really going to want to be kinder towards them? Probably not, though we suppose you can make the argument that SNL also hasn’t been that kind to Trump in general.

Ultimately, any commentary from Schneider at this point feels meaningless because this is what SNL is as a series right now and it is hard to imagine that it is going to change within the near future. We don’t think that even if SNL suddenly became more conservative it would win back any viewers who previously bailed on it.
