Supergirl season 3: Chyler Leigh talks Floriana Lima, Sanvers, and more

Alex Danvers

This past weekend was a big one for discussions of LGBTQ representation on television, largely because of the convention ClexaCon in Las Vegas. CarterMatt has reported on some news from that convention already in the form of Wynonna Earp; on this occasion though, the emphasis is being placed more on Supergirl and, of course, the Sanvers relationship that brought so much to the show beginning with the second season.

Chyler Leigh (who of course plays Alex Danvers) was one of the guests at the convention, and while there for a panel discussion she talked about one of the most emotional television moments of the past year: Some of the final scenes she filmed with Floriana Lima as Maggie (at least for the time being) and also just how difficult it was to even see social media after the breakup episode first aired. She speaks about how personally invested she gets in these stories and in turn, how difficult it was to see her go. We understand that — even though Alex and Maggie may be fictional characters, both actresses put their heart and soul into their performances. They made that relationship feel real to every single person who viewed it and they lived as those characters. They saw events and emotions through their eyes.

You can see much of Leigh’s devotion towards the character and the story in the video below, along with her describing how she fought for the relationship and how only a small percentage of the scenes she filmed with Lima ended up on television. There is still no official word on if Lima is going to return to the show for the finale or at some other point down the road, but we are continuing to hold out hope for it someday. Remember that Supergirl has already been renewed for a fourth season.

If you love Sanvers, the most important thing to note here is that there is no acrimony to be found here. Lima has expressed an interest in returning, just as the show bosses have some interest in having that happen, as well. There would obviously be a number of different things to work out, but it’s clearly not lost on anyone just how important and beautifully-told the Sanvers story was. Leigh’s appearance as ClexaCon is further validation of something that is already well-known. The relationship gave many out there confidence and a voice in some ways that they hadn’t felt before and it will continue to live on no matter what happens on Supergirl in the future. Of course, there also still remains an active fanart and fanfiction community celebrating Sanvers in a variety of different ways.
