Grey’s Anatomy season 14 episode 18 review: Arizona’s frightening moment

Arizona - breast cancer

Going into Grey’s Anatomy season 14 episode 18 we had a pretty good sense that there was going to be some devastating reveals — still, we didn’t quite expect there to be one as almost-devastating as what we saw with Dr. Arizona Robbins.

Her storyline tonight with Owen revolved around the two working together to see if a doctor was giving people false cancer diagnoses after getting someone at the hospital who effectively had nothing wrong. She and Owen then went undercover in order to see for themselves precisely what was going on here, but in the process of that, Arizona found herself the recipient of some rather unfortunate news of her own: She may actually have breast cancer. Owen checked what the supposedly-bad doctor was seeing, and unfortunately he ended up seeing the same thing.

Suffice it to say, this was a painful reveal … but one luckily that was eventually overruled by April doing a scan and determining the violation false. Tonight is the night Grey’s Anatomy almost gives us a heart attack.

As for what else transpired tonight, much of it almost faded because of what was seemingly happening with Arizona. Alex got physical with Koracick after he learned that his and Amelia’s new treatment for Kimmie didn’t quite work. She now only has days left to live and Tom isn’t willing to put her through the pain anymore.

Meanwhile, tonight focused on some of Richard’s struggles with alcoholism after his AA sponsor was admitted as a patient. He had to face the idea of losing her and that was incredibly difficult for so many different reasons. For starters, the character has to come to grips with the fact that someone he talks to constantly is in grave danger. This patient did bring him closer with Amelia, and in the case the worst happens he does have someone else (thankfully) at the hospital that he can relate to.

With April, she spent most of the night on an apology tour trying to figure out how to make amends for her wrongs. That was great for her, but also bad for Jackson when she told Maggie about how she “jumped her ex-husband.” Jackson said no to her advance, but that doesn’t change the fact that he didn’t tell Maggie about it.

Finally, there was at least a small sliver a good news over the hour in that Meredith and Jo have made significant headway in their treatment. With that in mind, she may be able to beat Marie in getting her method out there. That’s great for her own success, but it’s also equally great when it comes to the medical community as a whole.
