Riverdale – Sabrina crossover not coming in the near future
Speaking to TVLine ahead of the recent PaleyFest panel featuring Riverdale, show executive producer and Archie Comics CEO Jon Goldwater confirmed that they’re “not thinking about” the idea of crossing over the two series at the moment, which makes a certain degree of sense given that we’re talking about two shows that, while they may have similar source material, are actually airing in different places. It doesn’t make too much sense for The CW to prioritize a spin-off with a show airing on Netflix; given that Netflix has both Riverdale and the upcoming Sabrina series maybe they’re going to be a little more interested in doing something like this in the future.
At the moment, it doesn’t seem as though Goldwater is writing off the idea of doing a crossover forever, saying that they “would love it if they could figure out a way to cross over.” If it ever does happen though, there is still another issue to think about here when it comes to realism vs. the supernatural — how do you combine the two? As crazy as Riverdale has been to date, we’re still not talking about a series with a supernatural component to it. The parallel that we would draw at the moment is between Pretty Little Liars and then also the spin-off Ravenswood, which never quite got off of the ground the way in which some people really wanted it to. These two shows may just be better existing in their separate worlds with spin-offs saved for fanfiction.
