Riverdale renewed for season 3, per cast at convention

While it hasn’t been officially renewed as of yet, it does appear as though there is going to be a Riverdale season 3 coming up on The CW in the future. This news was announced via the cast while at Rivercon in Paris, and in so many ways it has been a foregone conclusion that it’s returning.

Although the ratings for the CW series have been down as of late (read more about that here, or watch our CarterMatt video below for more and subscribe to our YouTube channel), this is still a great series for the broadcast network. Not only does it generate great viewership, but it often dominates social media on the nights of it airing and offers the network up a strong, character-based drama that doesn’t rely so much on action or special effects. It’s a very different sort of show than the superhero/vampire stuff that The CW has been doing as of late.

Also, Riverdale is a show with success that isn’t always easy to chart just in terms of live+same-day viewership. It’s completely killing it internationally thanks to the Archie Comics brand and beyond that, it also carries with it the benefit of being hugely popular on Netflix (which airs it exclusively in several countries). Licensing the show through the streaming service is an excellent way to build further profits for it, though we know that The CW seems to have some concerns already about it being thought of as a Netflix show just as much as a CW show. The fact that Netflix picked up the Sabrina-based series, originally thought of as a spin-off, probably cements that even more.

We imagine that The CW is going to confirm the Riverdale renewal in the coming weeks alongside ones for many of their other popular shows including Arrow, Black Lightning, The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, and Supernatural. Right now some of the bubble shows include Jane the Virgin, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, iZombie, and the still-to-premiere The 100. Both Life Sentence and Dynasty are not expected to return and in general, it feels like this could be a year where the network purges a little more of their programming than usual — even while also adding Sundays to their lineup.
