NCIS: New Orleans season 4 episode 18 review: How is Sonja Percy leaving?

NCIS: New Orleans season 4 premiere

We wondered for quite some time as to how NCIS: New Orleans would be writing out the character of Sonja Percy; after watching the new episode airing on CBS Tuesday night, it was pretty clear as to how she is going to go. Ultimately, she just wants a change. Percy underwent a secret interview with the FBI without telling Pride in advance — he found out anyway, but she did wrestle with how she went about after the fact.

As the episode went along, it was clear that Percy had a lot of explaining to do and she took a little bit of time spelling it out to some other people. She’s had some arguments with Pride as of late and her relationship with LaSalle had certainly been hot and cold. Yet, Chris put it best: If she wanted to leave, the best thing that she could do is leave. At the end of the episode, we did learn that the job was Percy’s if she wants to go through with it.

On the show itself, Percy is undecided about whether or not she wants to take the job. Yet, in real life, we know Shalita Grant is departing. Therefore, don’t expect this story to be drawn out; we’re just glad that we’re getting it over two episodes rather than just a single one.

As for the case itself, this proved to be a dangerous, crazy mission in the jungles of South America that caused Pride and many other members of his team to assist a former colleague of his with a secret operation. This went about as you expected, at least in terms of the team winning and everyone figuring out a way to get on the same page. There were certainly action-packed moments within this but given that it wasn’t a pure mystery by any means, we also didn’t get a whole lot of a chance to really focus in on it. When you are dealing with something as serious as somebody leaving the show, it takes a really captivating case on the other side to hold your interest.

CarterMatt Verdict

To us, the exit of Percy still feels pretty abrupt and there is no other way in which to express that. It’s sad, but for now this really is just an “it is what it is” sort of situation. It’s hard to know how all of this came about behind the scenes but we wish there was a little more time with it.

“Welcome to the Jungle” was a solid NCIS: New Orleans episode; yet, it also seemed as though it had to twist its narrative here and there to match the reality of Percy’s impending exit.
