Going into tonight’s finale airing on Fox, now does feel like the right time to discuss some potential The X-Files season 12 renewal hopes. After all, trying to pinpoint exactly the future of this series is a big conversation topic at the moment for everyone including all of us here at CarterMatt.
What we know about where things are at the moment is simply this: Fox has not officially renewed the show for more episodes as of right now, and we also don’t think that a renewal will be coming up in the near future. There were two years between season 10 and 11 of the series, and it could be longer between season 11 and 12, in the event that the show even returns at all.
There are two primary components to what is going on here, at least per some of our own personal estimations.
1. The state of the ratings – At least in terms of live+same-day figures here in the United States, they are really not so hot. They are down significantly from the 11th season of the show and, to go along with that, they also are not altogether better than most of the other programming at the moment on Fox. When the series was first scheduled to air at this time the idea was that it would be offering up a cushy lead-in to new first-responder drama 911. Yet, as it turns out 911 has quickly become one of the biggest hits of the TV season and it is doubling the ratings for The X-Files on some occasions.
2. The status of Gillian Anderson – As sad as it is to think about, at the moment it doesn’t seem as though Scully is going to be coming back. Anderson wants to move on to other things and while show creator Chris Carter may say that he is open to doing another season even if Anderson does not want to do any more of the show, it’s still fairly hard to sell us on this being a smart thing for him to do. We know that there were episodes previously of the show without Gillian Anderson, but it wasn’t quite the same series then and it absolutely would not be the same series now.
