Legends of Tomorrow season 3 episode 16

Is Ava Sharpe a robot on Legends of Tomorrow? This is a question that has been out there ever since the title for season 3 episode 16 was first revealed: “I, Ava.” That seems like a pretty clear “I, Robot” reference, and the first-look photo above absolutely suggests that Sara Lance is visiting some sort of robot factory.

Yet, is this proof at all that Sara will learn the truth about Ava, provided that this theory is correct? Not necessarily, since Rip Hunter already did what he could in order to wipe records of Ava completely clean. Unless there’s someone at this place who is able to reveal the truth or Ava suddenly makes a revelation, this could stay hidden. Judging from the way in which she behaves to some of Rip’s previous dialogue, we don’t think that Ava even knows about her secret.

While that person under the sheet has roughly the same hair color as Ava, we’re not going to draw the assumption that this automatically is her. The CW in general didn’t release too many photos from this episode compared to others in the past. With that, there is clearly something that they are trying to hide.

As you would imagine, Ava being a robot could be a potentially enormous snag in the AvaLance relationship, one of the most-popular in the three years of this show being on the air. It’s the closest thing Sara has had to a long-term relationship with anyone since arguably Nyssa al Ghul during her time in the League of Assassins. She already has trust issues and this would be twisting the knife. (Then again, this is not the first time that Legends of Tomorrow has featured a robot/human romance — remember that time Rip kissed a human version of Gideon?)

In the midst of determining whether or not her great love is a robot, of course Sara has plenty of other stuff on her plate assembling the totems and trying to figure out if there is a proper way to defeat Mallus, the Big Bad at the end of the season. It actually doesn’t feel like we’re as close to the finale as we are given that we’ve yet to even meet Mallus in the flesh! Consider this one of those examples of the journey probably being more fun than the payoff.
