This Is Us: what we’d like to see in Season 3
The last episode of the season featured Kate and Toby’s wedding with a bit of a twist. As the wedding approached, Kate had recurring dream where the family celebrated Jack and Rebecca’s wedding anniversary (thus seeing an older Jack). We could tell not having Jack there made Kate upset, however, after some reflection she realized that in order to make room for Toby in her heart she had to accept that her father wasn’t there anymore. Meanwhile, Randall and Beth struggled to make Deja comfortable among their family. But, of course, there was a catch to all this. The episode flashed forward to a few events that haven’t taken place yet and left us with so many questions. So here’s what we’d like to see during Season 3.
Toby’s mental illness – During the Season 2 finale, Toby defended his love of Kate after his parents called her “unstable” because they had concerns about her. They mentioned that after Toby’s first marriage, he fell into a deep depression and took him a long time to recover. Flash forward and the show showed us Toby in his dark bedroom depressed, just like his parents described the previous time. Kate mentioned that she was going to call the doctor to up his medication. So the question that remains is what set him into a depressed state? Toby has always been the happy, kind man we know him to be. Even during Kate’s miscarriage, which could have been a trigger, he was strong. So this makes a wonder what could have happened. Did one of his parents die? We are guessing it has to be something big if it was an event, but then again it could just have happened. We are looking forward to seeing where this storyline will go.
Randall and Tess – One of the other flash forwards showed Tess (who we know became a social worker) and Randall talking about how they have to go see “her.” That was it. Many fans are theorizing that it was Beth they are referring to after she passed away due to a terminal illness. While this is certainly an option, we are think they may be referring to Deja. When we last saw her during the Season 2 finale, she was bashing Randall’s car with a baseball bat. So maybe, Deja stayed with Randall and Beth, but she never fully accepted them as parents putting a strain between her and Randall, Beth, and the girls. With this show, anything is possible and we are sure it will bring us to tears.
Kevin and Zoe – During his flash forward, we saw Kevin and his new love, Zoe, landing in Vietnam. Kevin was holding a picture of his father with the rest of his friends during the war. So what we’d like to see during Season 3 is why is he heading to Vietnam. It has something to do with his father, but what? Again, fans are theorizing that maybe his uncle, Nicky, is still alive and living there and others are saying Jack has a secret kid. Another option could be that Kevin wants to know more about his father during the war. It obviously had a big influence over his life and maybe Kevin is curious. While all of these theories are possible, we certainly hope the writers give us answers to our questions in the fall.
