Are other The Walking Dead spin-offs coming in near future

Walking Dead spin-offs

Is it possible that more The Walking Dead spin-offs are going to be coming up in the near future over on AMC? Possibly, at least judging from some of what’s being said by Scott M. Gimple.

For those who missed some of the recent news, Gimple was recently hired to be effectively the czar of the entire franchise. There is going to be a new person in charge of the day-to-day with the flagship series and he will oversee both this show, Fear the Walking Dead, and whatever else AMC may have in the pipeline. It is certainly a rather unusual decision given that this is the time Gimple is actually subject to more criticism than virtually ever before, but we are rather curious to learn precisely what he is going to come up with in terms of new ideas.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter recently, here is what he had to say about some of what could be coming:

“We’re going to be doing traditional stuff, non-traditional stuff, stuff people don’t expect … But yes, definitely scripted. The odds of unscripted are very remote. But I’m not going to say no. We’re going to have cool new Walking Dead stuff.”

Do we need more Walking Dead stuff? That is really the question. It does feel as though there are some cool stories that could be told in theory within this space, but the serious challenge at this point could just by finding a cadre of viewers who are excited to see them. Viewership for both shows at the moment is down and the anticipation is that in the aftermath of Carl’s death the declines are only going to be more substantial. Convincing viewers to watch a new property may be challenging given some of the controversy happening in the present.

Yet, it’s understandably why AMC would want to go in this direction given that The Walking Dead remains a fairly highly-rated franchise over on AMC in comparison to other shows, and it is the most successful franchise of its kind in basic-cable history. If there is more money to be made here executives are going to find a way to do just that. The hope here may also be that someone will come up with a concept that is interesting and compelling enough that it convinces viewers to come back even if they gave up years ago.
