Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Donald Trump’s foreign policy main segment

Last Week Tonight

After starting off tonight’s show by talking about a few different current events, whether it be the tragedy in Florida or the recent death of Jack on This Is Us, the premiere of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver eventually did make it to the main segment. There were clearly many different topical subjects he could have chosen!

Yet, in the end Oliver selected for this first show of 2018 Donald Trump’s foreign policy, a treasure trove no doubt — yet, this was not necessarily the direction we anticipated him going in leading up to the show. We were surprised, to put it mildly, by this course of direction. There were so many domestic things that Oliver could’ve talked about that he really didn’t need to go in the direction of foreign policy!

Yet, there were some interesting things that Oliver touched on in here that he has a very unique perspective on as someone who didn’t grow up in America, including how much of the remainder of the world perceives the country and how that is in contrast with much of what Trump said he would going into the election. Instead, Oliver highlighted the vacuum of global leadership, the need for other countries to step up to the plate, and the problems that are present with an “America first” ideology. He also decided to draw a Willy Wonka comparison with Trump as Veruca Salt.

Of course, Oliver did get in some jabs at various world leaders, including Vladimir Putin, and this helped to make this a very funny start of the season. We do think there was some educational information in here, but Oliver never forgot at the same time that this is a comedy show. He ultimately knows how to balance that out better than almost anyone. There’s a reason that so many people missed Oliver for the lengthy period of time in which he was gone from TV — he brings so much goodness to almost every single topic he takes on!
