Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Parkland, Andre Bauer, gun control start season

Last Week Tonight

Are you excited for Last Week Tonight with John Oliver to be back on HBO? Tonight’s the first episode in the past few months, and it was pretty clear going in that the host had MANY different headlines to try and digest.

We knew that President Donald Trump would be a hot topic, just as we knew that there were going to be many different news stories that were completely overlooked just because of the fact that there really wasn’t all that much time in order to discuss them in a 30-minute show. there’s barely enough time in here to cover a week!

Unsurprisingly, this season began with a discussion about gun control in the midst of what happened in Parkland, Florida, especially the reaction to it. You had conspiracy theorist Andre Bauer saying horrible things about some of the high school students speaking out; also, references to Tide Pods because it’s 2018. The best run of the entire episode probably was centered on The Andy Griffith Show of all things.

Also, Oliver touched on a few other different subjects within here, including Australia (a country he likes to mock here and there) and the reaction to Jack’s death on This Is Us.

Was there too much going on within the start of the show?

Maybe, but you can’t blame Oliver for trying to talk about many different things before getting to the main segment. This is a show with a lot of ambition and sometimes that happen — from a comedy standpoint, though, there is zero questioning that this opening alone was enough of a reminder as to why we love Last Week Tonight and are more than pleased that it’s back on the air.

Also, watching Oliver’s show mock local news and their silly traditions in a supercut remains nothing short of spectacular — here, he did it with Valentine’s Day.
