This Is Us season 2 episode 16 video: Jack’s time in Vietnam teased
One of the things that the network clearly wanted to emphasize in their presentation of their latest promo was that even though we’ve seen Jack’s death and accompanying funeral doesn’t mean in the slightest that we’re done with this character. Milo Ventimiglia got to shave off the ‘stache at one point in order to play one of the earliest chapters of Jack’s adult life that we’ve seen to date — his time spent in Vietnam. This preview offers up a small tease of it, enough to leave us both interested and also very curious as to how the This Is Us producers are going to choose to handle this storyline from here.
Will the final three episodes of season 2 offer up many of the answers we want? We would certainly hope so, especially when it comes to one of the biggest lingering mysteries: Jack’s brother Nicky. We know that he died, but there are still many details that need to be filled in here, as well. This death left an indelible mark on Jack as a character, given that it caused him to realize more than ever the importance of family and how much it meant to hold people you love close. This informed who he was as a father down the road.
Do we want there to be other narrative engines on This Is Us beyond just how certain characters die? Certainly, but we understand why the producers lean so much on morbid curiosities. It’s the mystery and the characters that do keep so many guessing. Also, we think that viewers on some level like feeling so raw and emotionally-fraught by this show. It helps to keep them human during an inhuman time.
Unfortunately, you do have to wait until the end of the month to see This Is Us really start to build momentum towards Jack’s time in Vietnam. Due to the Olympics, the show is off for the next two weeks.
