Outlander perspectives: Discussing the best new season 3 characters

Outlander perspectives

Welcome to day two in our Outlander perspectives feature week! From now until Monday, CarterMatt will be sharing some discussions and polls on a wide array of different fun, show-related topics.

Today, our focus is on the subject of characters — specifically, new characters. It’s pretty much a given at this point that we all love Jamie and Claire. Yet, they are only two components to the overall story. This is a rich, diverse, and fascinating world with characters who inform the larger story and give us a stronger sense of the period, the setting, and the sort of people who populate it. All are entertaining in their own right.

Below, you can see the five new characters that made the greatest impact on us as a reviewer through season 3 — following that, we want to hear from you! Vote in the poll at the bottom of the article (if you’re on mobile, click to view the non-AMP version) — we’ll keep voting open here from now until February 14 at 1:00 p.m. Pacific time. This is just a fun way to reflect on this past season; not only that, but it helps us know which characters viewers are most invested in.

Geneva Dunsany – Was she the most likable of people? Far from it. Yet, it’s hard to imagine Outlander being the story that it is without her presence in “Of Lost Things” and the overall impact that she has on Jamie’s life as William’s mother. By far, we consider Geneva to be one of the most-important one-episode characters throughout all of Outlander.

Joe Abernathy – It’s really nice for Claire to have a friend back in Boston — not that she’s there anymore. We feel like Joe was a necessary conduit to her in a time she desperately needed someone who was also an underdog and could relate to some of her struggles.

Lord John Grey – It’s hard not to love Lord John — he’s smart, entertaining, and savvy in a way that few other characters are. Also, David Berry brought a great deal of charm to every single scene he was a part of, especially some of the ones with Sam Heughan.

Marsali Fraser – She didn’t start off as the most likable character in “First Wife,” but we saw a great deal of growth from her throughout the second half of the season. She’s growing into being her own person, and we’re very curious to see how she reacts to being in America.

Young Ian Murray – Young Ian was an incredibly fun addition to the show in the first two episodes, though his story did take some tragic turns fairly early on after the character found himself forced into dealing with capture and eventual torment by Geillis Duncan. We’re thrilled that he made it out of that situation alive.
