This Is Us season 2: What happened to Jack’s brother Nicky?

This Is Us season 2 episode 14

We already knew that Jack’s brother Nicky was, at one point, in the war with him on This Is Us season 2. Yet, we didn’t quite get explicit confirmation as to what happened to him on Tuesday night’s new episode.

So is Nicky dead? This was the clear suspicion, but tonight we now have confirmation — he did, in fact, die, and that is the reason why Jack doesn’t really talk about it. Ironically, there is now another mystery that surfaces that the show will need to address: How that happened. How exactly did Nicky die? What happened to him? These are questions that hopefully, the remainder of the season will do its best to try and address on some level. Or, it’s possible that it will come about in season 3.

We don’t necessarily think that this is a death mystery as elaborate as what happened to Jack, mostly since the easy assumption to make is that Nicky died during the war. Yet, there is almost certainly a much larger story here for a number of reasons, beginning with how little Jack talks about him. He may be harboring a certain amount of guilt or pain over what happened to Nicky and that may be something that he is struggling to face. Or, maybe it just hurts. Jack is someone who likes to live in the now. He doesn’t talk all that much about the past because he wants to be present in what matters. Tonight’s episode contained many reminders that he was a great father, and to the Pearsons, that is what matters the most.

With that being said, that doesn’t stop us from asking some more questions of our own. This is a show that really does like to have us pondering over some of this. We imagine that most of this story is going to move forward like a slow burn, mostly because this is the way things do with this series.
