Will This Is Us twist continue? Should it?

This Is Us flash-forwards

Tonight, This Is Us on NBC delivered what may very well be the biggest twist that it has delivered since the first season: We’re not being restricted simply to the present or the past anymore! We got our first taste of the future tonight — albeit a small one — learning that Randall’s daughter Tess ends up getting a job within the foster-care industry inspired in part by the experience that she has with her father growing up.

While this may have been one small moment in the future, it does beg a very important question: Is this the first of many? Is this something that NBC should really consider the rest of the way this season? We can see this going two different ways.

There is some logic behind continuing the flash-forwards every week from here on out, given that it gives you another layer to the story and a chance to really get excited about more mysteries and questions. Seeing Tess as an adult is exciting, and it could be interesting to learn if either Kevin or Kate end up having children. Yet, there’s also a chance that this is something that the show saves for down the road to keep some more mysteries at heart for a while — we are only in the second season, after all, and it doesn’t appear as though This Is Us is ending soon.

One of the challenges that could come with throwing so many different flash-forwards into This Is Us from here is that it means, effectively, that we could be setting ourselves up for another tragedy. Could Kate be dead? What about Kate or Kevin? We’re sure that there is probably going to be some other reason why we’re crying for hours at a time once we actually start to get more of this timeline.

Ultimately, we do think that we should see more flash-forwards by the end of this season, and we certainly think that we will. Why introduce this only to not go back to the well? It makes sense to show us more and to try to give this series somewhat of a longer life.
