Super Bowl commercials 2018: Febreze goes hard with bathroom humor

Fabreze

Throughout Super Bowl Sunday, we’re going to be offering you a chance to see some of the biggest commercials on the night. Think of this as a way to get a jump on the big game, or a way to get some additional insight on some of the ads!

Today, we turn to a company in Fabreze who loves to make ads surrounding the fact that their products help make stinky things go away. That’s kind of gross, but it fits given that this is one of the grosser commercials playing during the Super Bowl this year.

The premise – Fabreze is basically designed to make bathrooms smell a little less like … you know what. This commercial told the story about a guy who’s (bleep) doesn’t stink, and therefore, he had no idea what Fabreze really was. Unfortunately, this guy is probably not at your Super Bowl party so you better hope you’ve got some of this stashed in your bathroom.

Brand recognition – It takes a little bit of time to get to the brand at the end of the commercial, but that is clearly the goal. Given that Fabreze has touched on similar subjects before, there is enough built-in brand equity that we really didn’t mind it being dragged out.

Creativity – This probably could have been about thirty seconds shorter and focused more just on the uniqueness of this man before getting to the Fabreze. This wasn’t laugh-out-loud funny, but we would say that it was probably facepalm funny. That’s not bad given the company and the point it was trying to get across.

Our overall grade – B. Yes, it’s pretty gross to do an entire Super Bowl ad about poop smell, but what else does Fabreze really have? All things considered, we didn’t really have high hopes for anything more than that. It was probably as good as you’re going to get.
