On Outlander season 4 and the merits of public filming

Outlander season 4 photo

Today, Outlander presumably wrapped up a stint of several days filming at Cumbernauld Glen in Scotland — and there is a ton of photographic evidence out there of it. This was, by far, the most public spot that we’ve seen season 4 filming take place.

At Cumbernauld Glen today there were throngs of fans in attendance, hoping to get a glimpse of series star Caitriona Balfe in action. There was even a local media outlet there, and they posted an interesting piece earlier describing some of what that scene was like.

Are there times in which filming in public can prove to be rather problematic? Absolutely, mostly because you don’t want to get to the point where crowd control interrupts production or where there are spoilers flooding the internet. Luckily, we don’t think either one of these are systemic with Outlander. While there are dozens of photos of people posing with Balfe from the past day or two, there aren’t too many direct indicators as to what sort of scenes are being filmed at present.

What are the merits to filming in public?

We should start by saying that we’re not recommending this to be an everyday occurrence for the show. Having it happen for a few days is one thing; however, doing it all the time could get exhausting. What we like about Outlander going into public for this amount of time is that it’s excellent community outreach. Think in terms of how much the show is in Scotland and how much in turn that the story celebrates the region. Yet, at the same time there aren’t actually all that many opportunities for the Scottish people to spend time around the cast and crew. That sort of community makes the show more intimate, and helps to build the show’s popularity on a local level. We’re very happy that the show now airs on More4 in the UK (even if the episodes aren’t live) since it offers up another option beyond just Amazon.

Beyond this, isn’t it nice to have some more stuff to talk about when it comes to Outlander during the off-season? We don’t typically get too many opportunities to talk about filming in such an intimate manner and it helps to keep the discussion going. Constant news about the show is just one of the ways we can continue to help build the audience — which, in turn, means a better shot at even more renewals coming up.

Speaking of which, remember that Outlander is still going to be renewed for a fifth season and likely a sixth. Don’t fret too much over the delay.
