So far on ABC this season, The Good Doctor has delivered some really impressive ratings. It’s also been warmly received by viewers to the point where Freddie Highmore has been the recipient of some awards consideration.
When you consider all of this, we do have a very important question to ask — why in the world has this show not been renewed for a second season already?
Compare the situation here with This Is Us when it premiere during the 2016-17 season. That show, like The Good Doctor, became an overnight sensation. Its numbers were slightly better than The Good Doctor’s are, but not to such an extent that we would put the two on different echelons. This Is Us found itself getting renewed for two additional seasons while at the TCA Winter Press Tour. Yet, for whatever reason we didn’t see anywhere near the same sort of success for The Good Doctor at TCA and that bummed us out.
We don’t think that there is any suspense as to whether or not the show is going to be coming back for another season; yet, we do think it would benefit The Good Doctor to get that renewal out there sooner rather than later. It’s just a sign of good faith, and a reminder to viewers who don’t follow the ratings that closely that it’s not going anywhere. We also do think that there should be some sort of incentive for shows that perform extremely well, and not just when it comes to reviews. Job security also matters to not just the cast, but also the crew. They want to know that they won’t be going anywhere.
As for when we expect the renewal to come in now, it’ll happen before the finale rolls around — as a matter of fact, we figure that it will happen by March. It would have been nice if that announcement had already been made, but there is certainly nothing to worry about.
