The value of Outlander marathons and the latest Weekly Roundup

Outlander season 4

Are Outlander marathons incredibly beneficial to the show’s long-term future, or they just fantastic promotional tools for Starz? With there being a massive season 3 marathon airing today on Starz, this does feel like a great time to ask this question.

One thing that’s clear is that most Starz subscribers have an opportunity to watch Outlander whenever they want, regardless of if it’s airing on TV. The series is available both on the app and on demand. Starz obviously wants their show to be as enormous as possible, so they want to give new viewers a chance to catch up! Having episodes readily available is the best way to do that.

So, with the app in mind, why is there still value in Outlander marathons? The answer seems to be simple: Old-school viewers. As crazy as it may seem, there are still many people out there who choose to watch Starz on television and don’t have much of an interest in checking things out via other means. They just want to check things out via traditional means. Maybe they’re really bored this weekend and simply decide to give the show a shot because it’s on. Obviously, Starz does generate solid ratings from these marathons given that this is far from the first time that they’ve ran a stretch of Outlander episodes like this. Plus, tacking on an exclusive season 4 scene tonight (airing at 10:00 p.m. Eastern) is a further incentive for viewers to watch and for fans to re-subscribe for a month when they were not planning to do so previously.

Ultimately, Outlander marathons have value — even if running them only helps live viewership by 1% in the future, that’s still 1% of an audience more than the show was receiving previously.
