Is an Outlander two-season renewal definitely happening now?

Watch the Outlander season 3 premiere

For the longest time, CarterMatt has said that we would be more than happy to get an Outlander season 5 — obviously, the idea of getting a season 6 at the same time is the icing on the cake, but it felt almost too early  for it given that season 4 production is currently underway and technically, Starz doesn’t have any specific incentive to order an additional season at this time.

Nonetheless, an Outlander two-season renewal may actually be what we’re getting. Much of the discussion coming out of TCA this week is that there are hopes for at least a couple more seasons of the show on Starz, and maybe more down the road depending on how the writers / producers want to handle the story. Given that there are going to be ten books by the end of the Diana Gabaldon series, there is certainly plenty of story left to tell; at the moment, we’re not even a third of the way through it!

The longer the wait before some renewal news comes out, the more likely it is that an Outlander two-season renewal is happening. As a matter of fact, this may be one of the reasons why the news hasn’t been confirmed as of yet. It’s hard enough to get everyone on the same page, from the studio to the network to the cast to the producers, to do a single-season renewal … let alone two.

Ultimately, there’s still no guarantee that we’ll get a two-season renewal … but that seems to be the direction some of the talks are heading in. Starz does like doing this, as they’ve done it in the past with not only Outlander, but also Power.

When will the announcement need to be made to avoid an extended Droughtlander?

While we’ve discussed this subject before, it’s worth revisiting in the wake of some of the comments at TCA. So long as a renewal is announced later this spring, in theory production may be able to go along at the same pace that they are at now. As for whether or not that happens even with a renewal, some of that may depend on if the cast / writers want a little bit of a break. While Outlander is far from the only show on the air that films the vast majority of the year, few others are so intensive on a small group of people and also feature so much work on-location. It takes a lot to make the show as great as it is.

Hopefully, more information on the future of Outlander will come soon — for now, just stay tuned for a little bit more of the latest insight on casting and everything else from season 4 production. We’re a week into filming in the new year!
