Outlander season 4 character questions: What lies ahead for Cesar Domboy’s Fergus Fraser?

Welcome to another edition of our ongoing Outlander character questions series! If you are new to this series, every week CarterMatt looks at another character from the Starz drama and projects some of what their future could be. There are no spoilers within, so rest assured that there’s nothing within this piece that is giving anything away when it comes to the books (we haven’t read the books). These are more in-the-moment speculations based on what we’re seeing from the TV version of some of these characters.

For Cesar Domboy and his character of Fergus Fraser, there is clearly a lot to look forward to during season 4. We saw the character lose a hand, age significantly over the course of the season, and by the end of it marry Marsali with the blessing of Jamie Fraser, a man who is in so many ways a surrogate father to him. They look after each other, and their relationship remains one of the more interesting ones within the series.

As for where Fergus’ story could head now moving into Outlander season 4, we do like to think that we’ve got a few worthy suggestions.

1. A more settled man – While we’ve always said that Jamie is in many ways a man without a steady home, Fergus is almost more of that than anyone. He is someone who has stayed close to Jamie over the years, but has frequently traveled and done virtually everything that he can in order to survive. What does Fergus look like when he’s settled somewhere? Can he find a greater sense of happiness with that?

2. What does the future hold with Marsali? – There was such an eagerness for the two to be married in season 3, and yet there wasn’t much of an inkling as to what their future would hold or what their future aspirations would be. This upcoming season marks an opportunity to explore that a little more in-depth.

3. Fergus the spy – We do think that Fergus is one of the show’s best secret agents — he’s sneaky, street-smart, and understands how to get what he wants. We’d like to see him use some of these skills to create a more stable and better environment for himself in America. Fergus could be the closest thing we get to Outlander becoming Turn: Washington’s Spies.

4. Plenty of screen time with Young Ian – After all, isn’t the bromance between these two characters fantastic? It was one of the more entertaining things about season 3.

5. Allow Fergus to be the hero – Maybe Fergus is the only one who can save Jamie and Claire, or maybe he finds himself in danger and has to use his resourcefulness to save his own life. We’ve seen through the second half of season 3 that Domboy is a fantastic actor who can handle comedy and drama really well. Let’s go ahead and push him to the limit.
