Mrs. Carter: We know that there have been some rumors out there on this subject for a little while now, but we are pleased to be able to report some happy news this morning.

The reports are true — Outlander star Caitriona Balfe is officially engaged to Tony McGill!

Speaking to People Magazine, Balfe confirmed that the engagement happened over the holiday break and said that she is “very happy.” The two have been dating for the past couple of years, though she has chosen to keep the bulk of her personal life out of the public eye. That can be important for many different reasons, including having a part of yourself that remains private and exclusive to just those who know you – very hard to do when your in the public eye. She wore her engagement ring on the red carpet, allowing herself to have a rare venue to discuss the big event publicly. Prior to the Globes, there were rumors of an engagement stemming from social media over the past week, but until she spoke of it herself CarterMatt did not want to announce her happy news before she had a chance to do so herself.

Congratulations to both Balfe and McGill! We hope that they have a wonderful engagement leading into a beautiful wedding!

It’s wonderful that the engagement happened over the holidays since that gave Balfe a chance to celebrate; after all, she is now set to dive into work once more! Filming for Outlander season 4 continues this month in Scotland; one of the reasons why Sam was not in attendance at the Golden Globes this year is because he had to be back at work for Monday. He did still come out and support her and the show at some of the pre-ceremony parties. Caitriona will return to work soon, and filming should continue in parts of Scotland / Europe from now until later in the late spring or early summer. At that point, Balfe and the rest of the cast could have more of an extended break … provided of course that they do not have some other jobs that they are lining up for the hiatus. Outlander is an incredible and time-intensive endeavor; often filming can take up a good three-quarters of the year.

We send Balfe  and McGill all of our best wishes. Feel free to share some of your own congratulatory comments below, and be sure to like CarterMatt on Facebook to receive more news on Outlander whenever you want it. (Photo: Starz.)
