Outlander season 4: Should Caitriona Balfe expect a Golden Globes 2019 nomination?

The results are in, and the winner of the 2018 Golden Globe for Actress in a Drama Series was Elisabeth Moss. Congratulations to her! She gave a great performance in The Handmaid’s Tale and is worthy of some praise.

While Caitriona Balfe didn’t end up getting the trophy in 2018, is there a way that the Golden Globes in 2019 could recognize her? Is she a favorite to win next year? These are the questions we are asking ourselves now — at the moment, she should have a good shot yet again.

We know that there are many people out there who are fairly sad about Balfe not getting the win. She’s done an exceptional job at playing Claire Fraser and this marks her third straight nomination without any hardware on the other side of it. Sooner or later, you do want to see the narrative change in her favor — and understandably so.

The reality here is that there are some people who get nominated year after year for awards and don’t often win. That happened with Steve Carell at the Emmys for The Office, and also for Amy Poehler with Parks and Recreation. Meanwhile, it happened for many years with Mad Men star Jon Hamm before he finally received one. Sometimes, voters just overlook an established performer who does a great job who appeared on a first-year show. That’s no slight to Moss at all — it’s just something that often tends to happen since new shows, especially at the Globes, sit in the forefront of voters’ minds.

For the 2019 we do know that the competition is going to be vast for Balfe once again. The Handmaid’s Tale is returning for more episodes this year and it’s possible that The Crown would, as well — albeit with a different lead in Olivia Colman. There is always going to be competition, and it could just come down to voter preferences and Caitriona having incredible chances to show the depth of her abilities.

Do we think that she will win a trophy for playing Claire Fraser at some point? Absolutely; the question is that if it will come next year or in one of the ones that follow. Sooner or later, we have to hope that the Golden Globes do recognize what an egregious mistake they’ve made over the years. The same goes with actually nominating Sam Heughan, who has been snubbed every single year he’s been eligible.

For those wondering, Bea Arthur and Debra Messing hold the record for most nominations among TV stars without a win with eight.
