This Is Us season 2: Sterling K. Brown on Randall, Kevin, and possible forgiveness

This Is Us season 2 cast

This Is Us season 2 returns after its holiday hiatus with a new episode on NBC Tuesday night, and in the wake of what happened to Kevin in the winter finale it’s a big one. Kevin has headed off to rehab, and while he’s there he must do his part to make some sort of peace with who’s he become and how he can fix it. Meanwhile, for Randall he has to process some of the difficult emotions that he feels about it. It’s easy to realize why he may not have seen the signs of him slipping into despair. In the case of Kate, for example, she was dealing with the reality that her unborn child is gone; meanwhile, Randall was dealing with the complicated situation surrounding Deja. They were both distracted, and Kevin was not exactly opening the door to let either one of them in. He was a man in ruins, allowing himself to kick the entire world around him down. His drinking and driving was him showing just how little he seems to care.

For Randall, we know he cares for his brother; yet, he also cares for his daughter Tess more than anyone. Even though Kevin have been oblivious to the fact that she was in his car when he drove away from Randall’s house, that doesn’t change some of the rage that he may feel.

For a little bit more insight on this subject and Randall’s emotional state, just see what Sterling K. Brown had to say to Entertainment Weekly about Tuesday’s episode:

“I can tell you that is something that we address directly when we come back … It’s complicated because it has to do with the nature of why Kevin thinks he’s an addict, and it has to do with whether or not Randall validates his brother’s perspective. When you think about the nature of memory, everyone tends to highlight those things that reaffirm their own perspective of truth. And Kevin, Kate, and Randall all have their own different versions of what their childhoods were that shaped who they are, and then they have very different ideas of how other people perceive themselves…. You see Randall working very hard to extend graciousness to his brother because his brother was present for him at one of the lowest points of his life, and now he wants to reciprocate that. But it’s hard to do that when you endanger somebody’s child.”

Expect to see many wonderful scenes in this episode between Brown and Justin Hartley, a guy who’s been killing it this season but hasn’t quite received some of the recognition he so deserves for this work. Basically, that just means that Sterling’s gonna have to win a Golden Globe for the two of them Sunday.
