Golden Globes 2018: Will Freddie Highmore, Jason Bateman, Sterling K. Brown win Best Actor?

With the Golden Globes 2018 airing on NBC Sunday night, it feels like now is the right time to start to look at the overall TV field. Who’s going to win?

Today, CarterMatt’s focus is on one of the biggest categories in Actor in a Drama Series. There are five worthy contenders, but as always only one winner. What’s somewhat interesting about this category is that even with a favorite in mind, we do still think that there’s a little bit of room for an upset contender to creep in here and take the trophy — that’s a good thing, given that awards shows do need surprises here and there in order to mix things up.

The nominees

Jason Bateman, Ozark (Netflix)

Sterling K. Brown, This Is Us (NBC)

Freddie Highmore, The Good Doctor (ABC)

Bob Odenkirk, Better Call Saul (AMC)

Live Schreiber, Ray Donovan (Showtime)

What will win – Let’s begin here by kicking off a couple of names on the list of contenders. It’d be great to see Odenkirk take home a trophy here, but Better Call Saul seems like one of those shows that will always be a bridesmaid and never the bride. It’s almost too funny for its own good as a drama series. Meanwhile, Schreiber is probably penalized just for being on a somewhat-polarizing season of Ray Donovan. He was as good as ever, but the show itself has had some better years over time.

Of the remaining three nominees, you have to lean towards Brown as the favorite. Voters have loved him ever since The People v. OJ Simpson: American Crime Story, and we don’t see that changing now.

Who should win – No doubt Brown is a worthy winner, and we do also love the fact that Bateman got a nomination. He was someone who had a great performance but somehow felt under the radar entering nominations.

Still, of the group of five we’re personally most interested in seeing Highmore take the trophy home. He didn’t get some of the love that he deserved for Bates Motel and he is the brilliant engine that drives ABC’s new breakout hit. His performance is heartfelt and at times devastating; it’s almost a cliché, but we really cannot imagine anyone else in the role.
