Should Outlander season 4 come to San Diego Comic-Con 2018?

As you look ahead to the Outlander season 4 calendar in 2018, there are a number of things that are assured. For starters, filming will resume early in the new year in Scotland. Beyond that, there will be new episodes airing before the end of the year and likely another promotional campaign all around it.

Should this campaign include another stop at San Diego Comic-Con? From a fan perspective it feels almost like a given that it should since SDCC is the biggest convention of its kind out there, and it’s become almost San Diego TV Con based on how many different shows go there in order to market themselves. Last year, Outlander made a huge splash when they opted to screen the entire season 3 premiere for the fans in attendance. While this certainly caused some jealousy from people who (understandably) wished they were there at the convention, we think that some of the hullaballoo around that ultimately died down a little bit over time. It was a cool thing to do for a group of fans and it offered up the cast and producers a chance to experience a large group of people seeing an episode for the first time. That’s an incredibly unique thing that not many people get to do.

As for whether or not they can pull off such a surprising stunt again at Comic-Con 2018, it doesn’t seem like it. They could still do it, or opt to release some other sort of fun video there … provided that they go.

One of the benefits for Outlander being at Comic-Con, besides the obvious promotion, is the fact that it takes place outside of the filming window. It’s one of the few major events between the conclusion of production and the start of the season. It just makes sense for the show to be there; but, you can also argue that it makes sense to take a break here and there since the schedules for everyone involved are so crazy.

Ultimately, the final point that CarterMatt is trying to make is this: Outlander doesn’t need to be at Comic-Con. Its ratings and popularity will be fine even if it doesn’t attend this year. We hope that it does continue to be a part of the convention just because it’s such a unique opportunity for the cast to interact with fans. While there are other conventions where cast members do attend here and there, it’s pretty rare that you can get almost everyone in the same room at the same time.
