Outlander season 4 video: Show execs on Jamie, Claire’s ‘quiet moments,’ the future

While we wait for more Outlander season 4 news, why not relish a recent video put out by the show’s studio?

You can check out a video where executive producers Matthew B. Roberts and Toni Graphia discuss what makes the Starz series so special. There are many things that qualify for that, but in this instance they touch on the themes of the show, the epic nature of it, and why it is so important for Jamie and Claire to have ebbs and flows. From a production standpoint, Graphia also touches on the importance of “quiet moments” as a means of telling the story — the sort of moments that often are not included in other shows, but the ones that actually feel the most real. The reality of the scenes between these characters stands as one of the biggest reasons for their popularity — they shine amidst a number of other couples on TV who aren’t presented in as organic a way.

It’s likely that there will be more quiet moments for Jamie and Claire in season 4, and without giving too much away, Roberts explains in the video just what the landscape could look like for them moving forward:

“Jamie and Claire have never really had homes. Even though Jamie’s home is Lallybroch, he gave it away. Every time they get there, something bad happens. They don’t stay very often. Claire’s always been a traveler. Once they arrive in America, they arrive in a place that they can call home together, and then the challenges of making a home will be where we go forward.”

Roberts goes on to differentiate a romance and a love story and in the process, he makes a number of interesting points. A romance is a story that effectively lies and dies by the couple getting together — once that happens, the fantasy is fulfilled and there’s not all that much left to say. Here with a love story you want to remain engaged and watching, just so you can see what happens with the characters all the way to the end. Even though Jamie and Claire may have a new home, their story is far from over. There are still some struggles ahead and reasons for the two of them to fight for their relationship. They’ve been stabilizing elements for each other and that will likely remain the case for some time to come; the big difference in season 4 is that you’ve got this other stable element in a home that should be assuring; yet, we imagine that there is also some danger and fear there. They don’t want anything to happen to this home that they’ve worked so hard for. If that does happen, they will have to hit the road once more.
