Could Carl die on The Walking Dead? The foundation is there

Chandler Riggs leaving

Is Chandler Riggs leaving The Walking Deador is the thought of such an idea really even possible at the moment? The AMC series is certainly not doing a whole lot to shy away from the possibility of this happening, and why would they? They certainly realize that it benefits them to keep the rumor mill churning out different stories and perpetuating the notion that anyone could be killed off the show at any time (even though we really know that the major character deaths are few and far between).

When it comes to the status of Carl though, there is probably more reasons to be concerned here than with most other characters. For one, you just have to look at the rumors that started last year about Riggs’ exit, due to him being accepted to college and having a whole lot more on his plate. We don’t necessarily think that there’s a lot of juice to the idea of him leaving the show because of it (he can easily schedule things out), but it is something to consider.

Beyond all that, though, there was the line in the premiere episode in which Rick was warned by the Saviors of “your boy’s gonna die.” While Riggs did appear within the Old Man Rick sequences in the premiere, he appears distant, almost as though he is fading away.

It does seem as though The Walking Dead is going to get rid of somebody this season, and with that in mind executive producer David Alpert notes to The Huffington Post that almost everyone is on the table insofar as a possible candidate to be killed off:

“I think we’ve shown time and time again that everybody’s on the table, and that we’re the type of show [where] we don’t have a problem deviating from what the comic does … We had people saying, ‘Oh, if Daryl dies, we riot.’ No, it’s like we hear you. We still get people petitioning us to bring Beth [Emily Kinney] back. There are so many people that love Emily that want her back. That being said, everybody’s on the table, and where the story demands we go we’re gonna follow.”

There is no denying that killing Carl, one of the most important people Rick is living and fighting for, would shake up the entire foundation of the show. Granted, there’s a part of our brain that wonders if we could really handle losing him. He’s one of the people who really grew up in the apocalypse and in general, we feel as though Riggs is really one of the most underrated performers in the cast.

Given that one of AMC’s executives recently said that he can imagine this show being a franchise that lasts decades, we might as well be prepared for losing everyone at some point. Nobody, including Carl, will last forever within this world… at least that’s what we keep hearing.

Do you think that Chandler Riggs could be leaving The Walking Dead at some point?
