Apparently, AMC wants The Walking Dead season 50

Walking Dead season 8

Remember how over the years CarterMatt has said that The Walking Dead would decide on an end date so they don’t drive this serious into the ground? Well, AMC is clearly laughing at us judging from some of their latest comments.

According to a report from Deadline, AMC CEO Josh Sapan apparently said the following during a conference call:

“The use of the word ‘franchise,’ we don’t take lightly … It’s not a sloppy or casual word. We’ve studied the best. Some have been around 30, 40, 50 years. We have a chance for a lot of life in the franchise.”

Now, let’s have a little bit of real talk here. The basic idea of The Walking Dead Season 50 is absolutely insane. Why in the world would that happen? Would there be any stories left to tell by that point? Judith would be running the entire show and could even a grandmother in her own right. Rick Grimes would be one step away from a walking skeleton if he’s still alive. Suggesting that this show could last 50 years is one of the craziest things that maybe any network executive has said about any of their shows.

Ok, now let’s take a deep breath now and focus on where we are right now. The Walking Dead Season 8 is still doing really well for AMC. The ratings are very good, and even if they are down a bit compared to past seasons of the show, that is not stopping it from being one of the most successful shows on TV. The problem is that over time, you are going to lose viewers just because people are eventually going to develop other interests or the show may just not appeal to them anymore. That’s the reality of how things go on TV. Setting an end date is useful mostly because of the fact that you’re going to have opportunities to keep the show engaging — viewers know when it will end and in turn, you will be building towards a conclusion. There’s no complacency. It’s a good thing to know that there’s going to be a specific point in which you’re saying goodbye; viewers will be inclined to stick around and see the journey play out.

For the time being, new episodes of The Walking Dead season 8 are going to air on AMC Sunday nights. (You can preview the next installment over here.) For the record, we do think that The Walking Dead should make it to season 10. After that, it may be time for AMC to address what’s really best for the show and if they could end on a high note.

How long do you think The Walking Dead could last?
