Outlander season 3, episode 8 photo analysis: Sam Heughan, Caitriona Balfe, and Laura Donnelly in ‘First Wife’

Laura Donnelly

Ready to see some of the first Outlander season 3 episode 8 photos? Wait no longer! Starz has released many different “First Wife” photos today.

So what’s the big takeaway from these? The simple summation is that life in Lallybroch is once again not going to be as peaceful as it should be. When you look at the location itself it’s almost idyllic — it’s beautiful, picturesque, and it seems as though it is the sort of location where everyone would live a happy quiet life.

Unfortunately, there are always problems that unfold there, with most of them serving as a function of some of the mistakes of Jamie Fraser’s past. Earlier this season it was his status as Red Jamie that kept the British Army patrolling the ancestral estate time and time again, leading to Sam Heughan’s character telling Jenny (Laura Donnelly) to turn him in so that she could collect the reward money and be safe. This time around, there could be some personal drama that unfolds there.

At the end of Outlander season 3 episode 7 (you read our full CarterMatt review here) viewers learned that Jamie is married to someone who is not Claire (Caitriona Balfe), and there could be complications that come with that. This other wife is not featured in the promotional photos — book readers already know who it is and we’re not spoiling that here for the sake of show-only viewers who love to see the story play out in real-time.

Judging from the promo that aired for this episode, it certainly seems as though the secrets are going to come out! The first photo (above) features Heughan and Donnelly, and in spite of him being the one harboring the great secret it actually appears as though it is Jamie who is the more confrontational of the two judging by the body language.

In this photo, it is Jenny herself who seems to be a little bit more confrontational and upset. While there have been some past visits to Lallybroch that were a little more joyous for Jamie and Claire, this one certainly will not be the case.

Here, it seems as though it is Claire being forced to defend herself. The difficulty of her situation is that it is one based on fabrication. She and Jamie cannot speak their truth, so trying to justify her absence proves difficult. Even without seeing the episode it feels easy to understand where some of Jenny’s frustrations towards Claire could come from — after all, she wants her brother to be happy, and certainly the idea of him having two different wives is more than just not ideal — it’s dangerous.

Finally, we conclude this piece with a couple of new Heughan photos. There’s nothing too deep to say here beyond that clearly, working around Lallybroch can be physically demanding.
