Today, Freeform confirmed that on Tuesday, January 9 at 8:00 p.m. Eastern time, the Maia Mitchell series is going to pick up with the remaining nine episodes of the fifth season. Over the course of these what you are going to see is The Fosters do much of what they do best, and that includes tackle some interesting, complicated hot-button topics. We imagine that in the aftermath of what happened with Ximena at the end of the first half of the season, immigration and DACA will be one of them. The character found herself hiding from ICE within a church — hence the photo above — with Callie and AJ doing everything that they could in order to help protect her. This is a show that is not afraid to touch on these sort of topics, and unfortunately there was an eeriness around the show’s summer finale in terms of just how accurate the struggle was for some of the characters.
Now, the remaining nine episodes will probably continue to touch on much of this while also bringing to mind a number of other political and cultural issues. While The Fosters may be at its core a family drama, it is rather unflinching when it comes to tough subjects and it shows more of a willingness to take some of these on than a wide array of shows that are out there. We hope it continues to display this much bravery as we push forward, especially since we do have Jude still experiencing life as a gay teen, Mariana continuing to try and revolutionize gender roles, and Lena and Stef merely doing their best to have a stable roof over everyone’s heads. Thanks to a myriad of problems, this has not been altogether easy.
As we’ve reported recently one of the best things that Freeform could do at the moment when it comes to The Fosters is start to prepare and work towards having a sixth season. The ratings are still solid (read more at CarterMatt here), and this is one of the network’s signature franchises. There aren’t any other ones that they have that tackle the source material here with the same deft touch. The Fosters is absolutely very funny at times, but it is also heartfelt, powerful, and gut-wrenching at others. It is many things to many different people and we’ll see precisely where the story goes next.
