Grey’s Anatomy 300th episode: Ellen Pompeo & Patrick Dempsey reflections
The image above is one of many images that has been released for this upcoming episode airing on November 9 entitled “Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story” — a clear Hamilton reference. We know that the show will be touching on the past extensively over the course of the hour, and there is no one shot that is more reminiscent of Patrick Dempsey and the Derek Shepherd character than this one. Think back to his final appearance on Grey’s Anatomy season 12.
The show’s fascination with ferries actually begins back in season 3 with the massive ferry-crash, one that led to countless deaths and an especially big story for Alex with Rebecca. (Remember that?) There is also the moment with Addison and the wedding ring way back when. Who knew that ferries would carry with them such an enormous connection to this show?
For those wondering, the scene with Pompeo is one of the many things that was shot back when the cast was up filming in Seattle earlier this year. They filmed a number of pickup shots to be used in various episodes, but some of this was planned in advance by Debbie Allen, the director of the 300th episode who will also be appearing in it as Catherine Avery.
Even if Derek’s name is never mentioned on the episode, just seeing this footage alone will bring some of these flashbacks into the picture. If the show does a good job here, it will set the table for everything else you see in the episode. We hope that this is one that is special and it’s just one of those milestone episodes that feels a little hollow beyond the celebration.
Unfortunately, it’s still hard to say any more about the story of the episode itself. We still have two more episodes to cover at CarterMatt before it airs, and as we reported over the weekend, ABC is not being altogether open when it comes to sharing information on this one in advance. Now that the photos are out there, you may have to wait until the start of November to get any more insight — think November 2, following the conclusion of the episode that airs that night. Typically ABC releases a promo either at the end of that episode or in the promo that accompanies during Scandal. (Yes, we do wish that ABC would just release the promos after the episode like they used to, but alas.)
