Grey’s Anatomy on Netflix: The popularity remains astounding

We knew that Grey’s Anatomy on Netflix had some sort of established following based on some of the social-media traffic we’ve seen. Yet, what we’re very much shocked to learn is that there are still so many people who are finding the show and discovering it so many years later.

Just how many, do you ask? This number may astound some of you out there. While speaking at USC’s Institute of Entertainment Law and Business this weekend Disney’s TV chief Ben Sherwood made it clear that there are, in fact, an astounding number of people finding the show. Take a look at the quote below via TheWrap:

“Every month 200,000 people watch Episode 1 of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ on Netflix … 2.4 million people a year discover ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ on Netflix. That has propelled ‘Grey’s Anatomy,’ now in its 13th season on ABC, to great success.”

Just try to think about that for a minute — that’s crazy that there are this many people still finding this show — of this group, how many of them get through thirteen seasons and start watching live? We’re very curious about this number, as well, but this probably does show more than ever the value of getting your show streaming on Netflix. It also makes us extremely jealous that we’re not getting all of the numbers across the board for some of these Netflix shows. There is so much in the way of interesting information here but, unfortunately, we’re not privy to the majority of it because of Netflix’s own standard policy. We would assume that this show is one of the most popular scripted entries that Netflix is licensing but who knows? Their way of doing things makes everything a little bit ambiguous.

The big takeaway we get from this more than anything else? ABC is going to want to keep Grey’s Anatomy on the air as long as they can. We weren’t quite sure that the show would last for twenty seasons or anything close to it, but after seeing these numbers coupled with it still being the network’s #1 show we’re starting to think that anything is possible.

For the record, though, the 2.4 million people finding the show on Netflix a year is a larger audience than many new shows get per episode on broadcast and cable. Crazy, no?
