Supergirl season 3: Katie McGrath on why Lena doesn’t know about Kara
Kara and Lena have established a close friendship, and when you think about that closeness there is often one thing that is factored into the equation: Secrets. If you are close to someone there is an innate desire to want to tell them everything that is going on in your world. You want them to understand your struggles, what you’re going through, and in the case of Supergirl, who you really are. Yet, for the time being Kara hasn’t been willing to bite and share more information. Even if she’s let her in on a number of things about her life, this part of it is at arm’s length. Maybe it’s because Lena is a Luthor, or maybe it’s because there are already too many people who know the truth about who she is already.
Either way, it still seems as though Katie McGrath is happy to keep the relationship the way that it is between the characters. She’s said in the past that it’s important that Kara, aside from Supergirl, has a real-life friend, and that is something that she echoes now to TVLine:
“I think it’s important for Kara to have someone she doesn’t have to be Supergirl with. If Lena knew the truth, she’d always be Supergirl. And she needs to be Kara. That’s what this whole season is about, her struggling with her humanity. She has to be solely that person for somebody, and if that person has to be me, it makes me feel special.”
There is of course a clear danger when it comes to this sort of friendship strategy and it goes a little something like this: If Lena does stumble upon the truth about Kara being Supergirl down the road, won’t she be upset? Won’t that cause even more trust issues? It may not have if it was a case where nobody else knew, but Lena would probably realize rather quickly that she is the only person close to Kara who doesn’t have that sort of knowledge. That could cause a few problems for the two and could turn Lena against her. We hope that it wouldn’t, but with this show you never quite know for sure.
