Grey’s Anatomy season 14 episode 3 review: Amelia’s team; Meredith’s anger

Grey's Anatomy season 14 episode 3Moving into Grey’s Anatomy season 14 episode 3 one thing we reasonably clear: There was devastation around every corner. Amelia just learned that she has a huge brain tumor, Meredith is recovering from some Riggs / Megan drama, and Bailey is trying to get the hospital back into normal operating shape after everything that happened with the fire at the end of last season.

For Bailey, one of the most important priorities was trying to make sure that the entire hospital was ready for Harper Avery. For the first time in years he’s stepping foot in the hospital and he’s not an easy patient to impress.

As for Amelia, she was going everything that she possibly could to keep her surgery diagnosis under the radar. Unfortunately for her, there was a problem in doing that: It’s the sort of thing that she really shouldn’t be working while having. She brought in her old neurology teacher Tom Korakick to take a look at her condition and he’s the one who delivered the tough-but-necessary news. Eventually Amelia went and told Richard Webber, and a negotiation began as to what she would and would not do at the hospital. From there, eventually she realized that she had to find a way to clue everyone in. When Owen finally learned the truth at the end of the episode the look on Kevin McKidd’s face almost completely broke us.

In the end, Amelia realized that she had a team on her side, and this is what will carry her through to the end of her battle.

As for how things went for Bailey and Harper Avery, not great. While the Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital does go great things, they also rather stink when it comes to making money. Harper fired Bailey for some of her perceived failures … not that it really mattered all that much since he did a number of minutes later. (Given that he does have such close ties to Catherine and Jackson, did anyone else find it strange that the show played this in such a silly way?)

After Harper’s death Jackson, Catherine, and Bailey straight-up lied to the rest of the staff about what Harper said — in this instance, better to sweep things under the rug, right?

Your Meredith / Riggs update

We didn’t touch on this too much earlier, but Meredith did get some much needed advice from her old hospital therapist this week while he was also dealing with a health crisis of his own. After all of this Meredith confronted Riggs, making it clear to him that he needs to fight for Megan if he wants to be with her rather than running away. She was angry, effectively, because he was blowing a chance to fulfill a dream that Meredith would still love to have.

The funniest part of the episode

One of the big patient-of-the-week stories this week revolved around a guy getting himself ridiculously busted up as a result of a hot-air balloon accident while trying to ask a girl to homecoming. He went through all of this and she still wanted to say no! This is ridiculous, but also some much-needed comic relief in the midst of everything else that’s been going on.

One of the darker parts of this storyline was the insinuation

CarterMatt Verdict

This episode was another powerhouse performance from Caterina Scorsone, not that we’re altogether surprised about this given that powerhouse performances are certainly her thing this season. While we do think that the Harper – death story was far too random and sillier than it needed to be, much of the rest of this episode was Grey’s Anatomy doing much of what it does best:
