Supernatural season 13 spoilers: Jeffrey Dean Morgan (still) wants to return

Jeffrey Dean Morgan

Calling Jeffrey Dean Morgan an integral part of the Supernatural universe is an understatement given his role. John Winchester is essential to the series’ mythology. After all, we’re talking here about someone who is Sam and Dean’s father in John Winchester! Without him there is no show, and his relationship with the brothers shaped who they are.

Unfortunately, John has been dead for over a decade now, but one thing we’ve come to learn about this show is that dead doesn’t quite mean dead. Look at Mary Winchester, Bobby, or a wide array of other characters who’ve come back even if they are not actually breathing in the present anymore. This is why Morgan, now rather busy being Negan on The Walking Dead, still does want to make a return trip happen. Speaking (per TV Guide) at a recent show convention, he had the following to say about it:

“We talk about it all the time and I’ve been saying it for years — because it’s Supernatural, and you can come back (as proven by every actor that’s ever been on the show), I certainly hope that at some point not only will John return in some capacity. But I think that Sam and Dean need to have some closure with this guy and I think that John would like the opportunity to have some closure, and I think you, the audience, deserves it.”

So if there is such a demand to get more of Jeffrey Dean Morgan on Supernatural, and the actor is open to doing the role, what in the world is keeping this from happening? That’s a great question. One of the biggest things at the moment is likely just the actor’s schedule, given that The Walking Dead is a lengthy production that takes a lot of time. It also films on the other side of North America.

Beyond just this, there’s another major challenge that could be in finding the right way to bring him back. When you’ve got a character like John Winchester in your mythology, you don’t need to do something for the sake of doing it. You need to have the right reason, and it has to be worthy of the show’s legacy. Hopefully it will happen before the series finale — we either think that it is appropriate for that, or some other big milestone episode. It has to be some sort of event at this point given that we doubt you can bring John back for more than an episode or two given Morgan’s schedule.
