The Last Ship season 4 ratings improve amidst season 5 chatter

The Last Ship season 4 ratings

Yesterday, we discussed the recent news that The Last Ship season 5, thankfully, is not the final season just yet. Could it be? Sure, but there’s a little bit of time for the folks over at TNT in order to make that decision.

For the time being, let’s focus on some other news that is both very specific and also very good: The ratings for the network drama are sailing in the right direction after some weeks of declines. It may not be enough to end the final-season chatter, but it shows there could still be some life left for the series. This past Sunday’s new episode generated in total a 0.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic — while it may look even with the prior week’s rating on paper, it’s actually an increase of more than 20% disguised by rounding the rating off to the nearest tenth. It also improved in total viewers from 1.46 million to 1.58 million. This is a very-nice increase that suggests to us that the lower numbers the week before may have been just to a prominent NFL game eating up a lot of viewership on the schedule. The Last Ship did improve despite airing against the Emmys … not that we think that the Emmys are the biggest ratings threat in the known universe to a show with this specific a following.

What we’d love to see next is for The Last Ship season 4 ratings to rise up to a 0.4 for the next week or two, and for there to be a new season high in the demo before the finale. This could allow the show potentially to build momentum enter the final season, though we admit that getting such improvement at this point could be challenging for many reasons. For one, this is a show that will be facing a ton of network TV competition over the next few weeks.

One thing that should help with this momentum is that the story for The Last Ship season 4 is clearly not going to be slowing down. To date, much of the main focus of the season has been on the seeds that could save the world’s food supply, and that is going to continue to be the case moving into Sunday night’s new episode. The promo below, if you haven’t seen it already, offers up a good sense of some of what the producers have planned.
