Grey’s Anatomy season 14: Sara Ramirez (still) not returning as Callie
More than one year removed from her high-profile exit from the ABC series as Dr. Callie Torres, executive producer Debbie Allen confirmed to TVLine recently that “there are no plans at the moment” to bring the actress back for another stint. She did add that the cast and crew “love her and we miss her, [but] there’s been no discussion of it.” Callie moved to the other side of the country when she departed the Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, and since that we’ve seen Arizona move on into a relationship with Dr. Eliza Minnick. However, we’re not going to be seeing this character again based on some of the information that is out there. Arizona will be presumably single at the start of season 14, and we’ll have to see if that holds.
At the moment, it remains to be seen if Ramirez will ever come back — she had some harsh words for ABC over allowing a comment aimed at bisexuals to air in an episode of The Real O’Neals (now canceled), and at the time she said that gave her little reason to work with the network again. Time can heal sentiments, but we’re not in a position to speak for Sara or what she wants to do. All we can say is that it would be nice to see her back on the show again. The idea of Callie of Arizona running off into the sunset together on this show is a nice sentiment, but the reality here is still that it’s far from a guarantee. It may also not be realistic given that the idea of a great love from our vantage point may not be the same way other people feel about. Think about this through the lens of life — you and many of your friends may think that a couple you admire are perfect for each other, but they may not feel the same way. At some point, you just have to trust their judgment and let them be happy.
For now, we’ll see what plans Grey’s Anatomy has in store for Arizona moving into season 14 — it’s going to be interesting to see what the show does with her now that she’s more than a year removed from Callie. Maybe this season will be more about her advancing in the medical profession.
