Grey’s Anatomy season 14: Marika Dominczyk leaving, will not appear

Marika DominczykConsider this a Grey’s Anatomy exit that many of you out there probably saw coming.

According to a report from TVLine, Marika Dominczyk is not returning for the show as Eliza Minnick for the upcoming fourteenth season, not that this is going to be a surprise to a whole lot of people out there based on where things ended with the character. She was out of a job at the Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, but technically, she was still with Arizona at the time. There were some ways that the show could have continued with her character in the immediate future, but we cannot say that we’re all that surprised to see Dominczyk moving on to other projects.

We do feel by and large for the Eliza character, given that she was thrust into one of the most impossible situations that you can imagine for the show. Consider this almost a perfect storm of suck for her: The majority of the fan base was predisposed to hate her because she came into the hospital with the responsibility of telling a number of people that their opinions on various teaching methods were wrong. From there, she also became a new love interest for Arizona following the departure of Sara Ramirez as Callie. How do you win people over after all of that? We wouldn’t mind seeing her again down the road, but in some ways it does make sense career-wise for her to just move on to another hospital that may be more malleable to some of her ideas — even if they tick off a few people in the process.

There are going to be some other new characters turning up in season 14 that should prove to add some more depth in lieu of Minnick’s absence. Take, for example, Abigail Spencer coming aboard for a significant stretch of time as Megan Hunt. Meanwhile, Jaina Lee Ortiz is set to play one of the leads in the upcoming firefighter spin-off, and with that we imagine that she’s going to be turning up on the flagship show at some point.

Time will tell when it comes to some other guest stars who are coming on board, but we still wouldn’t be shocked if Minnick does make another appearance on the show someday. The medical community does have a way of colliding into each other here and there, whether it be with doctors traveling or various conventions, similar to the one that we just saw Alex “attend,” even if that was just for the sake of finding Paul.
