Big Brother 19 episode 17 review: Paul, Jessica, and Cody chaos

Big Brother 19 episode 17 review

Big Brother 19 episode 17 started off precisely how you would expect it to start: Pure bedlam. Paul got into it with Cody and Jessica after nominations and it led to Cody shouting in his face. We don’t think they came off well, but neither did Paul. Expect nastiness to be a recurring theme given that this is a nasty week.

For a prime example of that, just look at Josh lashing out at Mark for very little reason. For the record, this is the moment we turned on Josh as a fun character in the game. Most of his nonsense has just been over-the-top and dumb, but he was just plain mean in this moment. Mark may be fairly spineless in the game, but we think he’s a nice guy who just wants to be cared about after what he’s gone through in life.

The mentality of Paul and his minions was such tonight that it was frustrating, but equally so was the show’s LONG montages of Jessica/Cody drama. They made the conflicts seem so much worse than they were, given that they probably ate up a tiny portion of a day. It was pretty clear from the start that they’d get over it and eventually get back together. They did, but for some reason, the editors decided that we needed to see these conversations almost in their entirety in this episode. Watching this episode proved to be exhausting both in terms of strategy and in terms of humor. It wasn’t fun, and it certainly wasn’t that strategic. It was mostly relationship drama and obnoxious fighting. Nobody came off that well, and it’s hard to get that invested in a relationship when it’s been YEARS since a showmance actually lasted for longer than a year or so after the game.

Oh, and Paul won the Veto … but you knew that if you watch the feeds.  This was the return of the weather competition, which was admittedly super-fun when it was on the show last year. This time, it was mostly good because of Kevin, savior of this season. Kevin is fantastic, and he needs to be given more airtime as proof of that. (#LoanSharks.)

Where’s the Veto Ceremony?

For those of you who are feed watchers, seeing potential fireworks here was the biggest reason to watch the episode. Well, the problem here is that for the first time we can possibly remember, the show actually didn’t give it to you tonight. The biggest reason for that may just have to do with the chaos that is coming around it.

If you thought tonight’s episode was depressing — and it was — be prepared in advance for tomorrow. In between the aftermath of the Veto Ceremony and the accusations left and right, Monday was one of the nastiest days on the feeds in recent memory.

As a whole, this episode was just … a downer. No other words for it. Grade: C.
