Chicago Med: Why Dr. Charles should survive his gunshot wound

Chicago Med season 3

It was the ending no one saw coming during the last minute of the season 2 finale of Chicago Med when a distressed client of Dr. Charles shot him outside the hospital. Before the episode faded to black hospital workers were rushing to his aid. So the big question going into season 3 is whether or not Dr. Charles will survive his wounds?

We definitely believe the writers should keep him alive. Why? Well, for a few important reasons.

First, Oliver Platt’s character is the voice of reason among his colleagues in the ER and helps them during tough times. Without him, the show would lose a key piece of why this show works so well. With Dr. Charles acting as everyone’s conscious it allows the other characters to express their problems, not only for the audience, but for themselves as well. The other doctors are better able to figure out problems that arise, because of his guidance.

For example, when Dr. Choi found a parrot during a field call at a hoarder’s house, he consulted Dr. Charles about it and got a surprising suggestion. Dr. Charles had given him some wise advice about not being lonely and how sometimes even an animal can make the difference. He helped Dr. Choi look at his life in a different perspective and one that would benefit his life.

Second, Dr. Charles plays a big part in Dr. Sarah Reese’s medical career. He has guided and has shaped her into the doctor that she is and without him, she will lose her mentor. He still has so much to teach her, because Reese has so much potential in a field she is making her own.

Remember when Dr. Sarah Reese decided to change her medical career path? It was Dr. Charles who gave her a chance by offering her a psychiatry residency spot because he saw something in her that she didn’t even see in herself yet. Dr. Reese often doubted herself early on in her new residency, but again Dr. Charles’s wise advice that gave her the confidence to continue.

Finally, the most obvious reason. Without Dr. Charles, who will consult with the doctors when a patient comes into the ER with psych needs? Dr. Reese could help, but as we mentioned she is still learning. He is the best psych doctor they have, so if he were to die from his wounds, the ER would be without an important resource.
