Sean Spicer isn’t ruling out Dancing with the Stars gig — seriously

Sean Spicer

Sean Spicer is going to be out of a job this fall, but it seems that a new one could come knocking in the form of Dancing with the Stars.

Is the idea of this completely ludicrous? Absolutely, but this also is very much in the DNA of this show to ask political figures/relatives of political figures to be in the ballroom competing for the Mirrorball Trophy. Just look at Tom DeLay, Bristol Palin, or Rick Perry as examples. They’ve also certainly asked some other notable names in the past, including Bill Clinton, to be a part of the cast only to be told “no” in response. (Good luck trying to get a former President on there.)

Spicer obviously would be a name production would want — Dancing with the Stars has a large conservative viewership, he has enormous name recognition (thank Melissa McCarthy on Saturday Night Live in part for that), and he may view this as an opportunity to show a different side beyond the brash, combative guy who fought with reporters at various press briefings. (These briefings were done on-camera increasingly less over time.)

Per Politico, Spicer still isn’t commenting one way or another as to whether or not he would do the show — which should make liberal viewers looking for a fun TV show escape from the Trump administration very, very afraid. He may just be hedging his bets here as opposed to committing to a future with the show.

Honestly, do we need this?

No, and we want to make it clear — it has nothing to do with his political affiliation. If this was a Democratic former press secretary, we’d feel the same way.

The reality of our times is that this is one of the most divisive periods in recent history, one where everyone has an opinion and many of these said opinions are heated and nasty. There is very little in the way of civility, and that is a super-depressing idea to think about. All Spicer being on the show will do is bring some of that nastiness into the ballroom, even if he’s there to lighten up his image and not ruffle any feathers. We’d prefer Dancing with the Stars to be an escape from politics where people can just watch, have fun and not have to think about that sort of stuff for a while.

Also, there’s also the competitive issue here — no political figures ever do all that well on the show, so there isn’t really all that much of an inherent reason to bring them on other than to be ratings bait. DeLay and Perry were both early exits, and while Bristol Palin made it far, she was one of the most controversial contestants in history. Remember the headlines that one person apparently shot their TV out of frustration that she was still there?
