The Fosters season 5 episode 3 video: Callie’s project by committee

Callie's project

When The Fosters season 5 episode 3 airs on Freeform Tuesday night, one of the things you’re going to get is a Callie progress report. She’s in the process of trying to get her new art project off the ground, but is in need of some help to make it happen. What’s the assignment? She’s got to do a sort of self-portrait, but over time, she’s realized that she’s tired of doing art that is strictly about herself. She’s been selfless (albeit impulsively so) much of her young life, so she’s never been that comfortable turning the lens around and focusing on herself.

Were we to extrapolate on this further, the beauty in the writing of the sneak peek below is that we’re seeing (ironically) our own video portrait of someone who wants to detach some of her present from her past. Think in terms of everything that she’s been through as of late, nearly ending up in jail, nearly getting raped or killed, and of course her life in the system before eventually arriving at Stef and Lena’s home. She’s been through hell, and she deserves a chance to get a little distance from that. For the first time in a while, things are looking up for her — she has a great relationship with a man in Aaron who cares for her and supports her, and she’s in a program that could help cultivate her artistic ability. She’s not forgetting the past, but wants to focus on the future.

This said program probably does realize that a big part of what makes Callie so special is her powerful story, and it makes sense that they would want her to showcase herself and reflect in some matter — it can be empowering in doing so. Of course, an institution doesn’t always have empathy for the individual. This is where Aaron and Callie’s family come in as they try to help her figure out the right way to move forward with the project and help her. They offer some useful suggestions in this preview.

Obviously, there’s a lot of drama going on with the family not seen in this sneak peek, given that Jesus is still in recovery, Brandon’s testing some new relationship waters, and there are still conflicts aplenty at the school. Yet, there’s something comforting about the family getting together and trying to achieve the common goal of helping one of their own. You don’t get to see it all that often on The Fosters in this matter, so enjoy it whenever it’s there.
