The Fosters season 5 premiere review: Is Callie now free?
Granted, she does owe a lot to luck when it comes to her survival, and to Stef being in the right place at the right time in order to ensure that she was okay to handle a stand-off. Stef warned her in the closing minutes that the time is right now for her to make some sort of a change. If she doesn’t express a willingness sooner rather than later to turn things around, then there is a reasonably good chance that she is going to find herself in a situation where she’s killed. Callie has shown time and time again that she is willing to put herself in harm’s way, and that’s admirable. Unfortunately, in the process she does need to learn that there is a little bit of value in figuring out that sometimes, she does need to survive.
For now, she has gotten herself out of that position, and thanks to the confession she also now no longer has to worry about any legal charges. She gets a rare chance to start fresh and move forward with her life. As for whether or not she actually gets to do that, though, that is something that very much remains to be seen. She has a knack for getting herself into some trouble.
Most of the premiere (entitled “Resist,” which is certainly a politically-charged name) revolved around seeing members of the family recover from the events of the cliffhanger. For Lena, that meant seeing the protest stopped over Anchor Beach thanks to a technicality. Given that Monte had never really consented to a vote as the Principal, the plan to turn the school into a private academy seems stopped for the time being. Meanwhile, for Jesus that meant trying to let go at his rage over the Brandon – Emma situation. He seemed to find some peace with Emma, but for Brandon, nothing came anywhere near as easy.
By the end of the episode, the biggest thing we learned was that this family is going to move forward with their lives, but they also need to also figure out some of their limitations. When you walk too close to getting yourself hurt, bad things can happen.
Our overall take
This was an interesting premiere in that for a show this big, it also felt very small and intimate. The primary focus was on just a handful of characters, and we got a chance to see them get out of some of the binds from last season. It was effective at resetting the board, but we do wish a little more time was spent with Brandon and where his head is at. He and Jude were given somewhat of the short straws at the end of season 4 and in this premiere. Grade: B.
