Last Week Tonight with John Oliver talks Mika Brzezinski, travel ban

Mika Brzezinski

Going into Last Week Tonight with John Oliver this week, it was all but assured that Donald Trump would be a subject of conversation. Specifically, we mean that through the lens of Mika Brzezinski, the MSNBC co-host who was attacked on Twitter for her appearance of all things.

Oliver did not spend a whole lot of time discussing the Morning Joe star herself, other than his frustration at some of Trump’s remarks insinuating that she was bleeding as a result of plastic surgery. His main point of emphasis instead was dealing with the shocking reaction that came in courtesy of Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who Oliver referred to as the “least appealing lead in a faith-based romantic comedy.” A simple, but effective piece of comedy.

Of course, there was so much more – You had to know that Oliver would want to discuss the travel ban, mostly because this is the sort of meaty material that he likes to take on. Remember for a moment here that Trump’s tweets against Mike were a major distraction from the travel ban, which was re-instituted after a ruling from the Supreme Court.

Oliver went through some of the rules briefly about the travel ban, including the odd rules that restrict grandparents but define many other family members as okay. The analogies in here were pretty classic, but appropriate. Ironically, we almost wish the travel ban got more air time on this show than it did, which is a pretty perfect microcosm for what is going on right now in popular culture.

Here’s where things got truly hilarious – Oliver closed off this part of his show by bringing up an interview on This Week, where a key player in Homeland Security found out that the entirety of his visit was going to be devoted to a video Trump put online of himself beating up someone with CNN superimposed over their head. This entire gif was basically a modified version of Trump’s appearance in what is now the WWE. The look at this poor man’s face during This Week was priceless / truly hilarious. You could see that he really didn’t want to be there for that, and yet, he was. Such is the life for many people in the Cabinet who have to make TV appearances.

Who knows? Maybe this is another distraction by Trump, but either way, he’s giving television shows more fuel to the fire. He’s providing them reasons to attack them, and he can attack them back. It’s a vicious cycle, and it may be one that he does on purpose.

As far as openings go, this was a very funny one. Oliver took on a wide array of relevant topics in a short period of time.
