Poldark season 3 episode 3: Should Dwight Enys be alive?

Dwight Enys

Moving into Sunday night’s Poldark season 3 episode 3, the biggest mystery is one pertaining to a certain Dwight Enys. Will he be found alive?

When this past episode of the BBC series left off, we knew that the character was overseas presumably in France; however, whether or not the character was there alive was unclear. He’s obviously a huge part of the show both as a confidante for Ross and also as a great love for Caroline. The epic romance is a big part of what makes Poldark the fan-favorite series that it is. While season 1 was in some ways the love story of Ross and Demelza, season 2 was the tale of Dwight and Caroline. (Meanwhile, season 3 to date is the love story of Drake and Morwenna.)

If the show was to remove Dwight from the occasion at this point, it’d be a gut-punch akin to losing Francis. Maybe the impact of it won’t reverberate as much, just because Caroline won’t be going and marrying George Warleggan as Elizabeth did. However, it would strip Ross of another touchstone in Cornwall, and this character is a bit of a wayward soul in terms of his purpose. Finding guidance in his life is not a particularly easy thing for him, and he needs to work harder than anyone to further ensure that he has this element of stability in his life. With Dwight gone, we’d be worried further for Demelza and his family that he would take his grief out to sea and never be the same man again.

Luckily, we’re also not incredibly worried about the character just yet. He’s so beloved, and seeing Poldark kill off two characters within a handful of episodes across seasons just seems cruel. We say this knowing full well that this is a show where terrible things happen, but Dwight and Caroline just got married. Would the storytellers really be this cruel? We’ll have to wait and see on Sunday to fight out — though we should note that we’re not a book reader or original viewer from the first series. Therefore, we’re not privy to whatever his fate may be. (Remember, there is no guarantee that the story for this Dwight will end in the same way that all of the others did.)
