The Flash season 3 episode 19: Tom Cavanagh to direct

Tom Cavanagh

We already knew that there were some reasons to be excited about The Flash season 3 episode 19 entitled “The Once and Future Flash” in terms of its story. Now, we’re also learning that there are some additional reasons in terms of what’s going to be going on behind the scenes! Tom Cavanagh is directing the installment, which marks the first time in three seasons that he’s held that role. Previously, he directed three episodes of “Ed,” but that was more than a decade ago.

Also, this episode is being written by Carina Adly MacKenzie — this is her first episode writing on The Flash. She’s got a CW connection already thanks to The Originals, and she’s got a TV journalism connection to go along with it. The more you know, right?

Now, let’s go ahead and get to sharing the official synopsis — it does offer you a few little tidbits in terms of what’s coming up:

“Barry (Grant Gustin) travels to the future to find out Savitar’s still unknown identity in the hopes of saving Iris (Candice Patton). Upon his arrival in 2024, Barry encounters future versions of his Team Flash friends, who, following the death of Iris, have become very different people, profoundly impacted by their showdown with Savitar. It will be up to Barry to infuse a sense of hope back into the team, as he proves to be hero his future friends have been waiting for. Meanwhile, back in 2017, the hunt for Killer Frost (Danielle Panabaker) continues.”

Obviously, there are going to be two very different but important stories that the show is going to balance. Going to the future, we’re going to have a chance to see Barry search for answers to the best of his ability. Meanwhile, back in the present the rest of the team will be hard-pressed to try and stop Killer Frost. All of a sudden, she’s seemingly gone full villain, and it’s going to be hard to figure out precisely how the team is going to suppress that now. It was one thing when her powers were only starting to come out. This may be the most powerful iteration of the character that we’ve seen to date, and presumably the more that she uses these powers, the more dangerous she becomes.
